Why celebs make me puke...

There's an old saying that "there's no such thing as bad publicity" and to that I present Lindsay Lohan. Even if you haven't heard the story, it's a classic case of a major star with tons of cash who can't keep it together by getting into trouble for the 1000th time. We in the media report it partly because:

A. It fills space in the paper
B. It fills time on radio/TV
C. It will give me something to bitch about in my blog, which lacks content on a daily basis.

Forgive me for being a conspiracy theorist but she does have a new movie opening up this weekend right? I'm not suggesting that her PR people tell her to get in trouble, but the timing in some cases is often a little too convenient. Celebs for the most part are good people making a living doing what they love while the rest of us work to pay off the mortgage before were 90. There's a growing portion of the rich and famous that for some reason or another can't keep their head's on straight.

Take Micheal Vick, who apparently needs a hobby because being a QB in the NFL isn't challenging enough. Go get yourself 7 Escalades, pimp them out one for everyday of the week and leave fido alone.

On a completely different note, good on the Sens re-signing Cristoph Shubert. He'll make about 900k a season which is good cake any way you slice it. This guy delivers every night and is a big body that can play pretty much anywhere. He doesn't have the Fisher star appeal but is one of those guys that every team needs. Selfishly I like the fact that Ray Emery will be an Ottawa Senator for the next 3 years. Expect the hangtime on his name to be at least 6 minutes by year 3.

There's a reason why I'm on the radio...

Now that I'm in my Carlsberg years I've realized that I'm pretty useless when it comes to playing sports. Being alongside some former Expos today at Lynx stadium reinforced that for good. Approaching the plate for batting practice, seeing Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd at the plate I actually thought (for about 10 seconds) that I would hit one off him. After 8 straight strikeouts I yell out "One more, Oil Can...this one's going deep" and without missing a beat he nails one down the plate at about a tenth of the speed he used to throw and quelle surprise, 0-9. I did manage 1-3 in the "real" game and tried to bunt at my last at bat....and then I remembered why my coach would always put me second to last in the batting order.

Original Expo Claude Raymond...

Warren Cromartie's reaction to my hit!

Here's me pretending to be "best friends" with Mr. Cromartie...

FYI - He's putting together a fantasy camp involving former Expos players sometime in January...we'll keep you posted.

TGOR photo part 2....

This is what happens in the summer when there's no hockey talk...TGOR nation emailers send stuff like this. I like what they did to me and Steve, but why was Buzz not photoshopped?

Now batting...numero #49

Today was a great day to work for a sports radio station, especially if you grew up an Expos fan. When I was a kid my dad would get free tickets from work (usually good stubs behind the home dugout) and we'd watch the Expos during the "good old days". Expos fans will remember Waren Cromartie who was our guest this morning on TGOR. I've interviewed a number of former hockey and football players but rarely get the chance to talk face to face with a former big leaguer. Growing up in Montreal these guys were larger than life and sitting opposite Waren Cromartie this morning it felt like AJ, Steve and I were in a bar with the guy just chatting about old times. Had Kenny (TGOR's fine producer) not reminded me to go to traffic, I'd still be sitting there. Number fourty nine is in town for the Lynx tribute to the Expos on Sunday (www.ottawalynx.com) and there's a chance for you to play alongside him and the others to just by visiting the Lynx website. As I write this, I'm not sure if the podcast from today's show is up yet, but if it is then download it, fast forward to 8am (unless you want to hear about AJ's rant about cats) and tell your co-workers to leave you alone for half an hour.

Julie Hinton on TGOR..

After posting this on the TGOR page on Facebook, AJ asked that I put this on the blog for the simple reason that we could all enjoy making fun of Buzz (far right for those of you new to the show).
mornings@team1200.com in case you want to chime in while he's on vacation this week.

24 degrees and a guy named Frank...

The 6th annual Rautins-House celebrity classic was another success with over $75,000 raised for children's charities. Getting the chance to rub shoulders with the likes of Kirk Muller, TSN's Holly Horton and Jennifer Hedger, Sportsnet's Brad Fay along with many others was a real treat. It's a fun event at a great course and the live auction items were some of the best that I've ever seen. Speaking of which, I have to hand it to Steelback boss Frank D'Angelo who despite his Oscar snubbed tv commercials is about as normal in person as any of you reading this. Frank is a different cat who marches to the beat of his own drum and definitely lets people know when he's in the room. He puts his money where his mouth is and seems to enjoy outbidding most of the room when it comes to a live auction and from the guy begging for $$$, that suits me just fine. You put your hand up, I'll take the cash.

TSN's James Duthie after he failed to hit past the ladies tee.

(okay, so that might be a slight exaggeration...he nailed it 260)

5 time CIS winner Osvaldo Jeanty from the Carleton Ravens doing what he does best.

When it's -30 and my car won't start in the middle of January I will look at this picture from #9 at Camelot....
Fresh off her interview with TGOR, Julie Hinton begged to have her photo taken with me...that's how I'm going to remember it so screw off! (http://www.juliehinton.com/)

TGOR and mini helmets...

If you were listening to the show this morning Buzz and Steve couldn't figure out why I would spend $47 on a Tom Brady mini helmet. Now that you've seen it for yourself, I'm sure you would agree it's not worth more then $3, but put a sports logo on just about anything and I'll buy it. I needed another mini helmet about as much as Paris Hilton needs to be on the cover of another magazine....(Yes, TGOR regulars, that was an analogy) Unlike my Patriots chip and dip helmet, this thing doesn't really do anything but sit on the shelf and collect dust, which begs the question, why buy it? And to that I say...why the heck not? My wife came home the other day with a new pair of shoes and what did I say? "Honey, did you really need another pair?" If you've been married for more than 4 minutes you learn not to question your wife (I will eventually learn). As for the helmet, keep making them and sports nerds like me will keep buying them.
