As a regular contributor to Faces Magazine, here's the piece I wrote for January:

Welcome to 2012 and if you made a new year’s resolution, there’s probably a good chance you’ve already broken it. Mine was to eat fewer potato chips and that lasted 3 days. This is not to the month to start eating properly anyway, (hopefully my trainer at Greco Sparksstreet doesn’t see this) but the NFL playoffs are in full swing and the moment that Sens fans have been 20 years for (besides winning a Stanley Cup) is the NHL All Star game which takes over the Capital from January 26-29. The fun begins on Thursday Jan 26 with the NHL trophy procession (Rideau Canal from Waverly - Ottawa Convention Centre) with all the league hardware travelling down the canal to officially open the weekend. That afternoon the Scotiabank NHL Fan Fair opens at the Convention Centre and for the next three days you can bring the family for interactive games, special appearances, trophy and memorabilia displays, live TV and radio broadcasts, music, food and dozens of other activities (CapitalTickets.ca or 613-599-FANS). Later that night from 8-9:30 the NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft takes place at the Theatre du Casino du Lac-Leamy. Hockey fans will remember this from last year when Phil Kessel from the Leafs was picked last, needless to say that won’t happen to him again this year. On Friday (Jan 27) you’ll want to be on the canal for the Energizer night skate, a 5k skating event that will benefit the Sens Foundation. This is perfect for families, friends or impress the date with you’re your skating skills! Money raised will go to building future outdoor ice rinks in eastern Ontario and western Quebec (www.energizernightskate.ca). On Saturday from 9-Noon the Canadian Tire NHL Junior Skills National Championship takes place on the Rideau Canal, where finalists across the country compete to show off for a segment on CBC. That night the Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition (which is still my favorite event) is on at Scotiabank Place, and has all the big names showing off their skating, puck-handling and shooting skills. Then Sunday afternoon at 4, the main event takes place (also at Scotiabank Place) when the Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game shows off the league’s best. The game has been around 59 years and is always fun to watch. By the time the ALL Star weekend is done, most of our credit card statements from the month before will have arrived and we can all do the same thing when opening them “I spent that much??” – Here’s to a successful and healthy 2012 and I wish the best for you and your family.

The #NoMoreBullies hashtag was created and the idea was born. At the Power of Women event in Toronto recently....wait a sec, why am I writing about that event when I'm a guy. At Majic 100 we had a contest to go to the show and meet the headliner Ellen, so yours truly chaperoned the winner. (Ellen, by the way is very tiny in person and sweet...) Ok, so there's 4000 women in the room and 5 guys. One of the speakers Loretta LaRoche tells everyone to act goofy once in a while and just have fun, eluding to the fact that we're all wrapped up in our own BS a little too much. She was very funny and right. We're all busy in our daily lives, so try something silly today. Here's an example of just doing something for no reason, other than having fun. Laptop open, listening to some old school music.

This day 20 years ago while away at camp, an opportunity came up to host a radio show. The studio was modest at best, in the rec hall kitchen and consisted of 2 cd players, a cassette deck and a microphone. Having been a fan of radio ever since I could remember this was my big shot, or so I thought. The frequency was 640am and maybe 10 people in the whole camp of 700 heard the show. What started that day was something I've never let go of and that's chasing the dream. In the past 20 years I've been able to do things I never thought possible and met so many incredible people along the way. The celebrities and rock stars are a nice perk, but meeting listeners like you everyday who give us even 5 minutes of your morning commute is what I cherish most. I'm always telling my kids to follow their dreams and as they get older they'll learn about the roadblocks that come with that, but it only makes you stronger and appreciate it more when you get there. I'm closing the first chapter of this amazing ride and getting ready for the next 20. In the meantime, here's the Eagles "Hotel California" on YCC radio, 640am....

Huey Lewis and the News

Back in the fall of 2010 a conversation on the radio turned into a Facebook page which then turned into asking, ok...begging Mark Monahan who runs Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest to bring Huey Lewis & the News to come play Ottawa.

On Sunday July 10, they came to Ottawa and played one heck of a show. Huey even had time to talk with Majic 100 prior to his show and he was appreciative of the support, thrilled to be back in Ottawa - and really down to earth.

5 minute Royal Ottawa recap: Will and Kate

Prior to the Royals arriving in Ottawa for Canada Day, we tried a few things on Majic 100. First was to book a hotel room 24 hours before the big day. The city was booked solid, as we found out when we called the Lord Elgin. This staffer deserves employee of the month after this call:

Now, you know those fools who climb up a street lamp to get a better view? Well, in anticipation of the Royals going by Major's Hill Park on Canada Day I figured why not. After 30 minutes, the Police asked that I get down. "No prob, I said"...all I had to do was figure out how to get down!

When I did eventually get down, I did what many of you did and tried to hold the camera still enough to get this video. Watch closely, I believe the Governor General of Canada David Johnston gives me a wave..(I'm sure Majic 100 is on at Rideau Hall)

10 years for CHEO

As a lead up to this year's CHEO Telethon on CTV, I shamelessly wrote on Twitter "If I get to 10 thousand followers, I'll donate $1,000 to CHEO". Why more followers? It's an ego thing and the more people following you, the closer you are to world domination (Lady Gaga has 10 million followers) By Sunday, my count was around 3700 so I decided to donate the money regardless. CHEO has always been there for our kids and my wife and I are grateful to have it in our community.

It was after that conversation that we decided to make this commitment to CHEO for the next 10 years. Congrats to this year's telethon for raising a record 6.3 Million and thanks to all of you who helped make that happen. It's your bake sales, golf tournaments, galas etc that achieve that kind of success.

Ever set a goal and try something completely out of your comfort zone? On Sunday May 1st the CN Cycle for CHEO raised 621k and after years of emceeing these events, I biked 70k.

When you're a novice in these events and lazy like me, it was suggested that I train for the event. Huge thanks to my trainer Luke at Greco Lean and Fit (Beech street) and the Ottawa Athletic Club for letting me abuse their stationary bikes.

Recap: 0-30k, fairly simple and straight forward. 30-60k, into the wind and challenging. The last 10k with the finish line in sight, was the best part of the ride. I would encourage anyone who's never done one of these to give it a try and do it on a team or with some friends. My buddies Roger and Gerry (veterans riders) helped me stay with the pack and without them I would still be out there.

Now, after your support of over $4000 raised and 70k in the books...next up, 100k for "Ride the Rideau" this September, benefiting the Ottawa Hospital Foundation. It's only another 30k, how hard could that be?

Several weeks ago I was approached by management at Bell Media (BOB, Majic, The Team, CFRA, A Channel, CTV Ottawa) to see if I was interested in moving over to Majic 100fm. Many have asked why the change, so here goes...

I've had 15 amazing years on Ottawa radio. My first 10 were spent at the Bear where I learned how to become a broadcaster and thanks to my boss Gord Taylor, was allowed to make many, many mistakes along the way. As most of you know, sometimes you reach a point where you want to try something new and in the summer of 2006 I moved to sports radio at the Team 1200. Always a fan of the station, I tried my best to make it work. Talk radio is one of the hardest things I've ever done. Many people can blog about the Senators and their favorite sports teams but it takes a true broadcast professional to make it work for 3 hours everyday. I don't regret the decision but am glad that I gave it a shot. You learn from your mistakes and move on. Fast forward to the summer of 2009 and my same bosses approached me with the chance to move from the Team to BOB. They would take JR off the morning show on BOB, reunite him with Steve and Jim on The Team and put me with Sandy. I knew Sandy for many years and for the last year and a half we had laughs every morning on BOB.

The reason for the short history lesson is because I heard this week that some people were spreading rumors that I'd been fired from my previous jobs. That couldn't be further from the truth. Many people in radio and TV work in different markets. I've been lucky enough to do it all here. I've read negative criticism before and it's never bothered me, but that one did.

Majic 100 dominated Ottawa radio for almost 20 years. Kevin and Bill were in the drivers seat and led the station, but some things eventually change. Kevin's health has prevented him from being on the radio and I respect his privacy. Bill, retired from Majic two weeks ago and the new morning show with me, Angie Poirier and Trisha Owens started last Monday. For the longtime Majic fans, I realize change is never easy and I hope you'll give the new show a chance. For those of you that aren't as familiar with the station, please add 100.3 FM to your presets and give it a listen. There's many options for you every morning and I'm aware of all of them. All I'm asking for our show is a chance to win you over.

On Sunday May 1st I'll be joining thousands of people from Ottawa/Gatineau and biking in the CN Cycle for CHEO. On March 28th, Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod spoke about it in the Ontario Legislature. Here's the transcript, thanks so much Lisa!

Ms. Lisa MacLeod: I just want to echo my colleague’s great statement from the city of Ottawa. We’re really proud of those Carleton Ravens. Great job to the member from Ottawa Centre.

I’m rising today to acknowledge a great community hero in Nepean–Carleton and of course across the entire city of Ottawa.

Stuntman Stu, who’s known by live audiences and Ottawa Senators’ fans but also by Bob FM listeners, has used his local celebrity status to raise money and give back to our community by advancing many causes and charities. Of course, he is a Barrhaven resident, so I’m particularly proud of he and his wife whom I often see at charitable events throughout our community.

Just last week, Stuntman Stu and his co-host, also a Nepean–Carleton resident, Sandy Sharkey, sold their show so to speak to raise money for the Ottawa Humane Society. They raised $11,000 for the Fur Ball. Last Thursday, Stu was also at an event I had attended called Twestival Ottawa, a fundraiser for the Royal Ottawa Hospital. They again raised $11,000 for mental health awareness and treatment in our city. Stu has also become a wine connoisseur of sorts when last year he launched Stuntman Stu wine, with $2 of every bottle going to benefit the Sens Foundation, and let me tell you a little bit about the Sens Foundation. Among other things, they contribute to Roger’s House, which is Ontario’s first pediatric respite and palliative care home. On May 1, however, Stuntman Stu will be taking his philanthropy to a new level. He will bike 70 kilometres in the CN Cycle for CHEO to help kids with cancer in our region. He has a heart of gold, and I know, on behalf of all of my colleagues in the Ontario Legislature, we support his efforts to raise money for this very important charity. Thank you very much, Stu.

The winning bid belonged to Frank Napolitano from Mortgage Brokers Ottawa.com - Frank is well known in the Capital, heard every Saturday on CFRA, a regular contributor on A Morning and a pet lover with a big heart. Don't let the photo fool you, when it comes to biking more than 5 km I'm still a rookie. Last fall I biked in my first charity event and will be doing it again on Sunday May 1st at the CN Cycle for CHEO. Having emceed many events like these, I'm getting to see the other side...the fundraising side and looking for your support. This event helps kids affected by Cancer, and that alone prompted me to trade the microphone for the handlebars.

Stuntman, "You're Fired"!

The Senators struggles on the ice this season have been well documented. One area that always seems to do well is fundraising. Saturday night, the annual "Bell Sens Soiree" gala took place at the Hilton Lac Leamy. Over 800 guests along with the entire team were there to raise to over 360k for charity. There's always a fun theme to the event and this year it was Manhattan. From a 5th avenue silent auction area to Broadway acts, your emcee chose to dress up as Donald Trump. All you really need is a sharp tie and a good wig which Malabar provided.

He was in town at the NAC and most had no idea what to expect. Is this guy going to bake a cake for 2 hours? He spends his time on stage talking about how the show got so big, sharing stories from his past and inviting the audience on stage to decorate cupcakes. It's a fun show for all ages and fans of the Cake Boss won't leave disappointed. My wife and I watch the show and like the sold out crowd are huge fans so during the Q/A with the audience I went up and offered him cash for a cupcake. He was out of them, so I asked for a hug. Shameless? Yes. But it went to the Make a Wish foundation which Buddy spoke about earlier in the show. Next up, a visit to Carlo's Bake Shop!

Before you read this, it's not a paid advertisement, but a reminder. This is time of year when there's plenty of office parties and dinners with friends. I was out for dinner the other night and got to the point where I knew I wasn't driving home. Instead of leaving my car downtown, I called Responsible Choice and about 45 minutes later, they arrived and picked us up. Calling a taxi or taking the bus is always an option but I like waking up the next morning with my car in the driveway. Leslie Nielsen passed away on Sunday, at age 84. In 2003 he was in town speaking at a fundraiser. I had the chance to interview him.

I remember sitting down with him and being nervous, here's how it went:

Ok, so Conan isn't coming to Ottawa, but a former resident is going to be on his show when it returns to late night next week. The Capital's Jon Dore will be appearing on Conan next Thursday (Nov 11).

You'll be able to see Conan weeknights at 11 on the Comedy Network and on CTV at 1am.

Over the summer a little known band called "The Dube Brothers" picked up some local attention as they were busking outside of Bluesfest every night. The pint sized band made up of 3 brothers are well on their way to raising 100k for Haiti's orphans. One night, some of the guys from Arcade Fire joined them and now have offered to match whatever the boys raise up to a million. I met the guys prior to the Sens home opener (where they played) and bought a toque, which to my amazement fits my massive mellon.

When I first moved to Ottawa 16 years ago to attend Algonquin College for Radio Broadcasting, I had to look for a part time job. I worked at the school pub (Bert's Bar, now the Obsevatory) and as a server at Dunn's. Once the rent was covered, beer money was needed and I auditioned for a gig with Big Time Murder productions. With no formal training as an actor, owner Pete Dillon took a chance on me and hired me to play two different roles in his many productions. That same company, now going on almost 20 years is looking for new additions:

Actors, singers and Stage Managers to join the cast of part-time, paid professionals, performing hilariously interactive Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre and Variety Shows. We contract performers per show, giving the performer the choice to work as much or as little as they want. Looking for men and women, 20-70 years of age, with a big personality, comedic timing, a strong sense of humour, improvisation ability and, above all, people skills. Singing ability is also considered a great asset.

Watching Canada win gold in men's hockey last February never gets old. Here's a 10 minute piece that was put together with reaction from across the country. As the Sens kick off another season, one can only hope someone does a similar compilation when the Cup heads down Elgin street in June (hopefully June 2011!). After watching this video you'll need a double double from Tim Horton's, a visit to Canadian Tire and the need to put on a toque. It's a must watch for any proud Canadian.

If you won the lottery what would be the first thing you'd buy? (after you gave to charity). Mine would be a new house with a 10 car garage. For about 30 minutes this weekend, I got to experience what it would feel like if my winning numbers came in. Mark Motors had the new Audi R8 Spyder on loan for a few hours and I was lucky enough to take it for a test drive.

For starters, the car is almost 200k and while the temptation is to hit the pedal all the way down, there's the reality of handing over my licence to a cop who's sitting and waiting for a guy like me. I'm a huge car buff, and thankfully the web is filled with more experienced car geeks who'll tell you all the specs on this car. All I know is that is goes from 0-60 in a heartbeat and for a brief moment on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, it was a thrill to drive. If you've been to this blog before, you'll know that I'm a Ferrari fan who also loves the 69 Dodge Charger and occasionally sneaks a peak at a Porsche. On this day I would have tattooed the R8 logo on the base of my foot. My film crew never arrived (that sounds so Hollywood...like I have a film crew) at the end of the photos there's a little taste of what it's like to drive this car (courtesy of Car and Driver):

In my continuing quest to try new things, I picked up some Beau's All Natural beer made just outside Ottawa in Vankleek Hill. I'm no beer expert, but enjoyed it and it went well with the burgers after summer hockey. You won't find Beau's at the beer store, only the LCBO. My kids like it because there's a tractor on the label and call Daddy's newest beer "tractor juice".
